Explore San Diego Tide Pools with a Marine Biologist

Adventure with a marine biology educator along the coast and learn more about wildlife living in the intertidal zone of San Diego. Great for all ages and skill levels. There are some stairs and lots of uneven terrain we will walk on, so this is not a wheelchair-friendly activity.

I taught middle and high school marine biology for more than a decade before committing to environmental tourism! With fifteen years of teaching youth and adults in outdoor education settings, plus my background in conservation biology, provides guests with in-depth (pun intended) knowledge of marine life during our tide pool exploration.

Groups are kept small (10 people maximum, with exceptions for private groups/families) which makes this a more intimate and personal experience.

Matt chooses dates and times according to the tide calendar, so we got to see a lot -- snails, anemones, ginormous sea slugs, crabs, mussels and fish, but the best part was that Matt had answers for every random question I had (and I had a lot)! I learned so many cool unique animal facts that day that I wouldn't have if I had gone tide pooling by myself! A few examples: 1. Sea slugs secret a chemical that make other animals throw up when they bite them, and their survival is important to the tide pool ecosystem because they eat an invasive species of red algae 2. Anemones cover themselves up with seashells as a holistic form of SPF 3. Perfect holes in snail shells were drilled by another snail to suck its flesh out 4. Mussels attach themselves to rocks by a liquid protein that turns hair-like once exposed to seawater

We learned so much from Matt and had so much fun while exploring with him. Our 10 year old boys were fully engaged and even asked to book again the next day! We were able to do tide pooling later in the vacation on our own with the knowledge we learned from Matt. He was so wonderful with the kids! He was able to teach at their level and made it so engaging for us all. This will truly be one of the most memorable things we’ve ever done on a vacation.

Matt was extremely knowledgeable and so very friendly. He shared all of his experiences with us and we had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend his tours and we hope to go on one of his snorkel trips in the future. This tour is perfect for all ages and is a must do when visiting La Jolla.
