We toured on the edge of dry season. The rain is just starting to fall again so it's still pretty dry. The day starts by meeting at Robert is here at noon and then heading into the park. Mike was our guide and was super friendly and knows his stuff! He took pics all day and will send us the pics (I look forward to getting them!)) We started with about an hour long hike/wade through a Cyprus dome. The water was about calf/knee height for most of the hike. Mike showed and told us about a lot of plants - air plants, orchids, cypresses. He also taught us a lot about the everglades. He found a water moccasin we checked out. The walk was super cool - but after the first 30 minutes or so the novelty started to wear off. We then drove down the 9 mile pond for kayaking. Again, it's the start of the rainy season but it's still very dry. As such the water level was low. We kayaked through the mangroves which were quite impressive. However, with the low water level it was hard work to paddle! Additionally, because of the low water level we paddled through a lot of sledge like water with a lot of decaying material. (Think of paddling through thick oatmeal that smells like sulfur). The highlight was when Mike found a gator who came up to us - about 5 feet away. He just sat and watched and we watched him. (Mike said they come up to the kayaks because we often scare up fish with our paddles). This was cool - but again I felt like it about 20-30 minutes too long. The novelty wore off. I think we were on the water for about 1.5 hours. We then drove down to the Flamingo center. We were able to see two American crocodiles off the dock - super cool! And we saw about 10-15 manatees there too! It was 7pm and we were just starting a kayak into the coastal area! We were both so tired from the previous kayaking that we decided to cut out for the day. We enjoyed the day - but we just wish the first two activities were slightly shorter - as they were drug out a bit too long in our opinion. Mike did a great job though and we learned a ton!

ur day with Garl was by far the highlight of our three week trip to the southeast US. We had always wanted to experience the Everglades, but didn’t know how. By luck our hotel front desk manager had been on a trip with Garl and highly recommended it. Garl started by leading us - barefoot! - to an alligator hole. As we walked through the beautiful cypress trees we passed alligator and snake tracks, rare orchids (many of which had been poached! Grrr!), beautiful bromeliads and fantastic ferns. As expected, alligator “Princess” and her huge mate “Snaggletooth” were hanging out in the pond. There was one live water snake on the shore and one dead one. Garl reports to the National Park Service when he sees dead animals, so they can monitor their health. Garl saved several huge, beautiful Florida gars that were flopping around in the mud. The drought had been so severe that the ponds had dried up. He carried two of them back to the alligator hole and another one to a different pond. He was covered in mud. He is such a dear, caring person. Next we paddled the 9-Mile Pond canoe trail. Because of the drought there were a few places where Garl had to get out of his kayak and pull us through. We saw several alligators, many egrets, Florida gar and other fish. At one point Garl showed us an alligator skeleton and told us the sad story of its death at the jaws of a crocodile. He waded in to get some teeth and scutes (spikes) to show us. Next we went to Flamingo to see a huge male and female crocodile who was protecting eggs she had laid in a nearby mound. There were also many adorable manatees, including a baby! On the way home Garl pulled over to get a stupendous photo of a huge, red full moon as it came up over the horizon. He asked the three of us if we wanted to go on a night walk to see alligator and spider eyes reflected in our flashlights. Of course we did! He also showed us how lichen lights up in gorgeous fluorescent colors at night. Throughout the day Garl used his HUGE professional camera with telephoto lens to capture photos of the wildlife, plants and us, which he promised to email. I can’t wait to see those photos! I plan to make a photo book of them to remind us of this awesome day! Thank you, dear Garl! PS I’m sorry that I scared you by washing my pants and shoes in crocodile-infested water! ;-) Kathy

Bottom line up front: Absolutely go with Garl's if you want to immerse yourself in the nature of the Everglades to see and learn about the cool plants and animals there. Driving through the park, it looked super boring with not much to do there -- but with Mike as our guide, we adventured into seemingly random stop-off points to experience the park and see everything -- gators, crocs, osprey, plants, snakes, manatees -- in the wild. We felt like we lived a day right out of a National Geographic magazine. Full review: My wife and I did a full-day Everglades tour and had Mike as our guide. Heading into the experience, we were hoping to get to see wildlife more up-close than could be done on the airboat tours, and hoping to learn about the Everglades. We got both of those, and so much more! Mike was extremely knowledgeable about the ecology of the everglades, and we learned a ton over the course of the day from just talking about the things we were seeing. What were we seeing? Well, we saw pretty much everything you'd expect or hope for -- alligators, crocodiles, osprey, tons of fish (including tons of Florida gar), brown snakes (and several snake skins), plus tons of lizards and really neat plants. Don't expect to be walking along hiking trails -- we were pretty much just walking into the 'brush' and would've been wading through knee-deep water had it not been so dry recently; instead it was trekking through mudded forests and paddling through sandy waters in the kayaks. So, fair warning - you'll really be out there so expect to get a little dirty on this excursion. That said, I can't imagine really experiencing the true Everglades without being out there, and I sure wouldn't have known where to go or what to look for, or feel totally safe, without a guide. And Mike was taking photos the entire time with his massive telescopic lens, so at the end of the day we got ~350 photos of our day that put to shame the pics that I took on my phone. It was a really nice touch for us to take home with us. If you're looking to experience the park, and are willing to get a bit messy while doing it, absolutely take this tour. It was an unforgettable day. Thanks, Mike!!
