After encountering freezing rain & sleet when driving to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, we turned around and decided to try the train ride the next day.
We booked mid level seats and enjoyed the 2 hour+ ride up and the drop-off was right near the Hotel & trail along the rim. We had about 3 hrs to explore, and the video theater that showed history & overview was closed. There was also still snow & ice (near noon) on several of the walkways, and we were very surprised that they hadn't been shoveled for safety sake! We took photos, walked the rim and got 2 brats for lunch with no seating except a few park benches (which were full).
The ride home seemed forever, but it was an OK experience. They had a musician playing guitar each way, and the train was robbed on the way back by bandits (with a hat for $$ or valuables) which thrilled the kids onboard. Staff on the train was helpful & fun and both the engineer & fire-person were female & running the train! The only one in USA with both ladies in the engine compartment!
