We got a “deal” for some surf lessons through the condo we rented. Our kids have had lessons with Maui Wave Riders and we have always been completely satisfied with them. This time around it was with Surf Shack (which turns out to be across the street from MWR). When we arrived, they were very organized, broke everyone into groups (Little’s and teen’s), and then started with dry land instruction, followed by into the water. The instructors were GREAT! MWR were good, but it was a different feel with Surf Shack dudes. They seemed heavily invested in getting the kids to learn etiquette and technique and worked really hard to get the kids up again and again. And then there’s Church. Church is a surfing dog (turns out he is a service dog, trained in emotional support, according to his Instagram Page). At any rate, once the kids were getting up and surfing in, they got to get Church riding with them. What a hoot! Only down side, where MWR were better at was the photography service. MWR is very commercially advanced with provision of extremely good photo packages, which we always bought because the shots were amazing. At Surf Shack, not so much. Who wouldn’t want to have a picture of their kid surfing with Church the surfing dog? We were all ready with credit card in hand. Unfortunately, our kids were not provided that option. So, bring your camera and try to get a telephoto lenses to get the shot yourself.
