My wife and I (both in our early 50s) went on the Haleakalā sunrise and bike tour our first full day in Maui since our bodies were still operating on EDT. We had Derek and Teresa as guides and they were awesome. Teresa did the driving up to the top of the crater while Derek informed us about what was going to occur and kept us fully entertained with his jokes. Arrived at the crater about 20 min before sunrise with a close parking spot to allow us to get to a good spot to watch the sunrise. Temps were in the low 40s. Thankfully we had fairly good weather to be able to see the sunrise. We departed about 20 min after sunrise was complete. We were driven down just outside the park to meet up with the bicycles - we made a stop prior to this where Derek took everyone’s picture in a sky dive free fall pose. Prior to the trip, we had read some pros and cons regarding how dangerous the bike ride was. In our case, we were able to ride without any issues. The ride is almost completely downhill and you can go pretty fast if you so choose but you can also go at your own pace. Traffic was no issue. We stopped at a Lavender shop and ate breakfast at a restaurant in Kula on our way down - these places were pointed out by Derek on our way up. Also, there are 6 turns to get from top to bottom but during the drive up, Derek did a nice job engraining the turns into our brains such that it would have been difficult to get lost. We enjoyed our adventure and would do it again. Not sure how it would be if rainy weather.
