This was awesome, highly recommend waking up early to catch the sunrise tour! Keith was our driver and Jackie our guide. They gave great instructions for the self-guided bike tour as well as interesting info about the area on the ride up and to the bike drop off. Timing was perfect as we were one of the first tour groups up there so we had prime viewing spots, the stars were incredible, and the the horizon was just starting to lighten. We even had time after the sunrise for a quick hike to the summit just above the viewing area, which is the highest point in Maui. The bike ride down is easy and fun. By doing the self guided, you can enjoy the eucalyptus forest, stop by a lavender farm, eat a leisurely breakfast (our guides made great recommendations), and pick up some yummy butter rolls and still be back to the bike shop well before lunch time.
Suggestions: Do this your first morning in Maui so your body isn't adjusted to local time yet... made the 1 AM wakeup more bearable. It will be cold, even in mid-May and with layers, an ear warmer, gloves, and the jacket/pants over my clothes I was cold. But the natural beauty made it easy to bear. It warms up as soon as the sun is over the horizon, but can still be cool in the shady areas as you speed down the mountain.
