My husband and I did the Haleakala Sunrise Self-guided bike tour. We loved it. A very unique experience that everyone should have when they visit Maui. We stayed near Napili Bay, so had to leave around 1:45 am to get to Haiku where the tour begins by 3 am. We did this the first morning of the trip so that it was easier to get up early due to the time change. Definitely recommend doing it this way, otherwise getting up this early would be pretty difficult. Upon arrival, you check in and get fitted for a bike helmet. They also provide complimentary rain jackets and rain pants. These are not meant for insulation or warmth, so I highly recommend bringing several layers, a heavy coat, and gloves for the summit and the bike ride down! Our bus driver and guide were Eddie and Jackie - they were very friendly, informative, and helpful throughout the trip! Very concerned about our experience and overall safety. The sunrise was around 6:25 am and we got to the summit around 5:45 am. Plenty of time to get a good spot - but gets very cold if not appropriately dressed. The sunrise was absolutely beautiful! Then they take you just outside the park to get started with our bikes. It was still pretty cold until we got a good ways down the mountain, so again - I can't recommend layers enough. They also provide complimentary backpacks, but we brought our own larger backpack so that when we removed layers going down the mountain we had someplace to store them. The bike ride down was fairly easy with only 2-3 spots of uphill biking (maybe 0.5 mile uphill total). They give you plenty of time to go down the mountain fast or leisurely. The guides also point out good spots to stop for coffee, lavender farm, or breakfast on the way down. We ate breakfast at the Kula Lodge - highly recommend!! Great breakfast, amazing views. We also stopped at a small bakery on the way down. Overall a very fun experience. Pairs the stunning sunrise with a fun downhill bike ride (minimal effort) - highly recommend!
