Embark on a 4-hour whale watching tour. All trips are narrated by a naturalist or marine biologist guide, who will also spend one on one time with guests while on deck. My wife and I took the half day whale watching trip out of Monterey. The Discovery team kept the groups small which is always appreciated. Our boat had about 30 passengers. Each boat also had a naturalist who was familiar with all of the sea life in Monterey Bay. Our naturalist, Maddie, was excellent. She spent time visiting with different groups and got to know how experienced people were with whale watching and how comfortable they were on the water. The weather was very foggy and visibility was limited. The water was pretty rough and several people became sea sick. The company offers medicine for those who might suffer motion sickness. My advice would be to error on the side of caution and take the medicine if you even suspect you may become ill. We saw a humpback whale right away and then we went a good two hours without seeing anything. The captain told us that we traveled much further than usual (40 miles) searching for whales. Just as we began the trip back to the harbor our luck changed. We were lucky to get a rare sighting of a minke whale. Then a group of dall porpoises decided to surf along the front of our boat. Finally we saw a pair of humpbacks pop up near us and were fortunate that they stayed close to our boat for some time. In fact, the trip had to be extended because the humpbacks were to close to our boat to allow us to move. I highly recommend Discovery.

We have been whale watching many times in Monterey Bay, and this was by far our best experience. Just a few miles off the coast, we saw flying sea lions and anchovies and some very frisky whales. I shared just one image, but we saw flippers, heads and so much more. My daughter thinks one of the whales was giving her the eye. It was an amazing day with a great crew.

This trip was a big highlight of our holiday for us and our boys (11 and17) with sightings of humpbacks, dolphins and porpoise. The crew were great, and Sophia our marine biologist looked after us really well and was a great source of knowledge. Great to do the morning trip for the extra time and calmer conditions.
