The location was easy to find, check in was great, the representatives were nice, informative, provided suggestions about what we would be doing/seeing. I was told 6 people would go to the glacier where at the end we would meet up with 18 others for a 49 seat boat that would be 1/2 full. Well the first part was right, 6 people to the glacier, our first encouter with TOM, driver, Green bus letter B (he says this repeatedly). He was blunt (kill joy/fun sucker) and told us all the great things to do at the glacier and he had done them personally... although... we would not be doing any of that. He quickly told us that we would be leaving at 3:25 (he reminded us 4 times) in the 20 minute ride to the glacier. We were interested in the trails the representatives suggested, but Tom said we could not do the trails as we would have to run, there may be a bear on the trail and the rangers would stop us AND at 3:25 he would be leaving and you would have to find your way back. In short it was implied that we do the vistors center and do not stray too far. Sadly, all 6 people were at the bus stop by 3:10.
We enter TOM'S green bus letter B not to find 18 others, but 43?!? on the ride to the harbour, Tom takes a ride to show the other 43 people the glacier that we ironically paid extra to see, What a champ TOM!
We arrive at the boat, I think most of the people gladly rushed off the bus, to our wonderful naturalist (she was excellent) and the Captain and deck hand. Yes, we got snack! Water... nope.. Humpback wales yea a few, dolphins briefly.. a few, orca's check, a few, magically sea lions sunning themselves on the buoy and back we went.
Back to TOM, Green Bus letter B, it was a running joke n the back of the bus. On the way back, Tom was generous to mention all the other things at Juneau, knowing full well everyone was on a cruise and this was our only time in Juneau. I found it slightly irratating that everything was a negative of what you can not do. At the end, he reminded everyone the shop in Juneau are all owned by the cruise line(s), they would all be open until the last ship leaves (he was VERY wrong), most were closed.
Bottom line, did I get my bang for the buck... NO, did I learn what I would not do, YES, did I have a positive experience? NO, I thought this excursion was at best 2 stars, but to the Crew on the boat, they deserve 3, find a "new" Green Bus letter B driver with a positive attitude I think you could hit 4 maybe 5 stars.
My wife wants me to add that for what we paid - nearly 500 dollars, it was not worth it.
