After convenient pickup from your hotel, travel to the lush rainforests found in great abundance on the island's east side. Make your way to Hilo via Saddle Road, reaching an elevation of almost 6,800 feet (2,072 m). Along the way, pass through many of the microclimates that make the Big Island among the most exceptional places in the world. As you approach Hilo, glance inside a once-scorching conduit of molten rock from the Mauna Loa Volcano as your guide enlightens you to the significance of lava tubes to Hawaii's creation. After a quick trip into the nearby Kaumana Caves, check out Waianuenue, also known as Rainbow Falls. This stunning 80-foot (24-m) drop has beckoned generations of visitors to Hilo. After lunch at Hilo Sharks Coffee, visit the village of Pahoa and drive along the famous Red Road, which follows the Puna Coast on the southeast flank of Kilauea volcano. This beautiful stretch of paradise showcases some of the island's youngest and most scenic coastline. Lush rain forests give way to black cliffs, rocky coastlines, and crashing waves. Your journey along this road ends at Kalapana, a town that was mostly buried by lava in 1990. Next up is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and the summit of Kilauea volcano. Gaze into Kilauea's vast summit caldera, formed 500 years ago. The drive takes you past pit craters, scorched earth, steaming ground, and lava flows old and new. Enjoy plenty of opportunity to stop, look around, and learn about what's going on both above and beneath the ground.

Be prepared for a very full day if you book the summit to shore volcano van tour. Scott picked us up in Kailua at 9 am, and we were back after 7 pm. A full day! Scott had tons of information about the formation of the islands as well as historical, botanical (😁) and other big island knowledge. He had an answer for every single question we asked and his enthusiasm for the volcano was contagious. The lava lake was active the day of our tour, and so Scott arranged our itinerary so that we could get the most out of our volcano experience. Then we did a hike down a closed portion of crater rim drive and got another great view of the caldera. After the excitement of Volcano National Park, it felt like a long ride back to Kailua, but Scott timed the drive back well, with a stop at a black sand beach to break up the evening. I wouldn’t recommend this day for a group with small kids because of the long driving time. Overall, Scott’s knowledge and enthusiasm were appreciated. We (4 adults) thought it was great to have a guide to see as much as we could in one day- lava tube, Hilo, Rainbow falls (Scott added this stop at our request), volcano views, lava fields, the caldera, and a beach- a lot to take in all in one day!

Highly recommended trip, Scotty was an excellent host who shared his vast knowledge of volcanoes and the natural flora and flora of the Big Island. We walked down the caldera floor and across the lava rock and we only saw two other people on the entire path. Steam vents, misty rain and the sulphurous smell made it very otherworldly. Big island, big volcano, big day.

My adult twin daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Scott was amazing as a guide. He has a great sense of humor and has immense knowledge about the volcanos. He quickly planned the day when I told him I was looking to see an active lava flow. He prepared our small group of three of what to expect. The hike was challenging to me (out of shape 47 year old), but my 20 something old daughters did this without any major challenges. Scott let me set the pace. He often would hike out ahead to get a better view on the lava field to know where to head next to possibly see lava. This allowed me to catch my breath. Scott successfully found lava for us! He truly enjoys what he does. Scott is well prepared if you plan to hike on the lava flow. I would not have ventured out there on my own.
