What an awesome morning to spend in Yellowstone in the beginning of July. First off let me say that Shurr was able to change our kayaking tour at the last minute. We didn't realize the upper loop would be opening back up while we were there (after the flooding), and we wanted to hike Mt. Washburn, so it made more sense to do that hike while we were staying at Canyon Lodge, then do the kayaking trip while staying at the much closer Old Faithful Inn! They were very accomodating and made the change for us. When we got to the marina, the water was so placid. Just as smooth as it could be, and so quiet and peaceful. And the mountains in the background - just beautiful. I knew it would be a great morning for kayaking. My husband and I shared a kayak while our 16yo son had his own. Our guide was Aidan I believe. Super nice guy, had been around Jackson, GT and YS for a few years so he had lots of stories to tell and was a world of knowledge about the area. We paddled for roughly 3 miles over to a couple of geysers /springs. Neither was "erupting" at the time we were there, which would have been cool to see, but nonetheless I think we were the envy of all the tourists on land! :) And did I mention how peaceful it was on the water? After hitting the geothermal area we took a break at a small beach area and got out to stretch our legs/go to bathroom. Aidan had snacks for us (Kind bars, etc). We were there about 15 minutes, then headed back to shore. The wind had ever so slightly picked up on our way back, but you could definitely feel it pull you. I was glad to have kayaked tandem with my husband...I am in mid-50's and in pretty good physical shape, but paddling 3 miles with wind in that open body of water would have tired me out (and that's just with having light wind on our way back, not the entire trip). The next time we are in YS, we will take this kayaking trip - was well worth it!
