For a crew that does this for a living, seems like they needed a break.
I don't care for all the fake interaction but if that's what you have agreed to do for your livelihood the you should be the best at.
Its sad our son didn't want to snorkel right away so he stayed on the boat, and not one of the crew spoke with or interacted with him.
We just returned from the Big Island a couple of months ago and did a Capt Cook Snorkel adventure and from the time we step on the boat the crew were acknowledging people including the kids.
The experience is nice for adults but kids should have the greatest memory and the best time, I'm not saying cater to kids just little more interaction, kids don't know the deference of being fake or genuine so just a little bit of inaction goes along way. When parents see their kids happy then it makes tipping allot easier.
If the kids don't want to interact then of course move on, but acknowledging them goes a long way.
Last thing share a bit of knowledge of each site and its history.

It’s difficult for me to take to heart with confidence that your interpretation of your son’s experience is accurate. I question if perhaps there were other dynamics in play. We love all of our guests including the children. Fortunately there are plenty other guests and many also with kids that have appreciated the level of exceptional service our Captains and crew provide to all of our guests. My guys love their jobs as evidenced by the many 5 star reviews we regularly receive for making our guests experience special. I am sorry you and your son were having an off day.
