We had an amazing time with Zac on our trip up Mauna Kea for the sunset and stargazing tour. We had been up to the visitor center several years ago and viewed we would do this tour when we returned. We were not disappointed! We arrived at the top just before sunset... what a beautiful view from the top of Hawaii! We were actually diverted from our stargazing point by a storm coming in, but the rangers allowed us to gaze at another location, since we were already up there. The guys set up a telescope so we could see some amazing views of the stars. They also took photos of us under the stars. They then gave us a "star talk" about familiar constellations as well as about ancient Hawaiian constellationsand how the Polynesians were able to use the stars to guide them as well, which was pretty cool!
A an added bonus, we got to watch the lightning storm over Hilo! The mountain usual closes for storms, but since we were already there, we got to witness this amazing sight, too. Even the guides were excited!
It was very chilly at the top, but they had coats and gloves for us, as well as hot chocolate, tea, and oatmeal.
I would suggest if you get cold easily/quickly, bring your own hat, a sweatshirt, long johns, and maybe even wool socks--I was glad I did!
I would totally do this again; it was amazing!
