Преглед
The Salty Sitkan offers visitors Sitka’s most unique fish experience in Alaska. Visit the only metal art workshop along the inside passage open for classes to visitors.

Mike is a 3rd generation high school shop teacher with a decade of experience making students and teachers alike successful in all types of creations.

Mike will start this fast paced class by making the sparks fly on a state of the art CNC Plasma cutter to supply you with a flat metal animal blank in the shape of a variety of alaska creatures such as Sockeye, Coho or King Salmon, halibut, grizzly bears, dungeness crabs, bald eagles, pacific octopus and more!

You will get a unique chance to see inside a working cnc workshop and learn some of the tricks of the trade for turning dull, crusty steel into spectacular one-of-a-kind Alaskan keepsakes.

My husband and I had a great time participating in this class! Our instructor was very knowledgeable on all the aspects going into making our art and was very helpful throughout the class. He would spend time with us individually to suggest tips on how to improve our piece which was very helpful! He was very clear with his instructions as well, so if you’re afraid of power tools and such, don’t be! Overall, this was a super enjoyable class, we learned a lot, got to do something hands on, and walk away with a momentum from our time in Sitka! Plus, the fish are much lighter than we expected and fit perfectly in a carry-on or backpack for easy travel!

This workshop was a highlight of my cruise. It's been 45 years since I worked in metal shop. I had a great metal shop teacher in Grade 7. And Randy, our Sitka instructor, was excellent, too. Appreciated the step-by-step instructions, the safety precautions (safety glasses, gloves to handle hot metal), and the demonstrations before we started each task. We were a small group of four, each with our own work station and equipment. The cutout forms were ready for us: choices included various local fish included two types of salmon, a whale and a puffin. All are native to the waters around Sitka. I chose a humpback whale. First step was grinding off the burrs on the reverse side, then buffing that side. Then buffing the 'show' side. Next, we were shown how to use a mallet and blocks of wood to hammer our sculptures, giving them three dimensions. Finally, we were shown how to use hand-held torches to heat up the metal. We practiced on a piece of scrap metal to see how more heat takes metal from gold to blue to purple. The colour changes continued for a few seconds even after we turned off the torches. Fascinating! Then everyone did a herring as a smaller second project. I could see the improvement in the second metal piece -- gaining more control over both the grinder/polisher and the torch to selectively apply colour via heat where I wanted. My trepidation about working with metal was eased by the instructor's guidance and my growing confidence as I worked the metal. Wished I could have done more! If I return to Sitka, I'll be back for sure.

A great aventure while we were in port! Able to see sights in the morning then settle down for an unforgettable, creative afternoon. Mike , The Salty Sitkan, worked out a substitute teacher, since he was unavailable, and it was all magic! Randy started with a clear safety talk. We selected our fish, ground them, polished , pounded to shape ,then we torched them to create our gorgeous, glossy projects.so exciting- it’s a priceless memory.
