I'm a food tour fan and have been on some pretty good food tours over the years, but the Rhode Island Red Food Tour of a historical neighborhood in downtown Newport is on a whole other level. Kudos to Paula for creating and conducting this tour - you will definitely have a great experience and get your money's worth twice over. First, the food. No tiny samples here - at each stop you are getting full servings. I had a delicious hotdog covered with slaw, a piece of artisan pizza, a pair or awesome pork ribs, a glass of lemonade (others had a glass of craft beer), a huge oatmeal cookie and a dessert eggroll filled with cream and covered in berries. Each place we visited was different, we were welcomed in and had our own seating area and many of the spots were very special - for instance a back area at Mudville Pub with a bird's eye view of the baseball field. Amazing! In between Paula gave us a running commentary of the neighborhood from colonial times to the present, with updates on historic preservation plans in the works. Paula's talks were informative, detailed and designed to get you interested in learning more about Newport history and architecture. I'm a history buff and I've been coming to Newport and going on tours for 20 years, but I learned a number of things from Paula I never knew about Newport. I will go on this tour again the next time I'm in Newport for sure!
