Everyone always wants to jump on and ride fast when they’re with horses, and that’s exactly what our advanced ride is for. Experienced riders can kick up the energy a little and have a horseback adventure in a truly spectacular natural setting—Oahu’s North Shore. Guided by one of our wranglers, you’ll strike out onto technical trails and across open pastures, passing grazing cows who just might sneak a peek to see your skills!

This ride involves trotting and cantering, and it’s important that all participants have previous riding experience. Wranglers will assess riding skills and will base the pace of the ride on the skill level of the least experienced rider in the group. Our wranglers are well-trained and ready for anything, so as long as you have the horse skills needed, you’ll have a fun and safe experience.

Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller

Not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries
Not recommended for pregnant travelers
Not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health
Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
A minimum of 2 people per booking is required
Minimum age is 12 years
All passenger weights MUST be advised at time of booking. 220lb/100kg weight limit
Long pants and covered shoes are recommended; bring a light jacket if the weather is cold
We ride rain or shine. If canceled due to unsafe weather, you will be given the option of an alternative date or full refund
Phones or small cameras are allowed
No pregnant or intoxicated riders are allowed.

Gunstock Ranch far surpasses the two other ranches in Oahu that I wrote at. Lucas, the ranch wrangler, made the ride great. Wonderful horse. Great conversations along the trail. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the ranch. The scenery was beautiful. The ranch is first rate. All the horses they have are well cared for. Gunstock represents a true Hawaiian experience. Thank you Lucas for a great ride. I’ll be back.

We had a private advanced ride with Heather, and it was literally the highlight of our entire Hawaii trip, and the best ride of our lives!! We got to trot, canter, and have amazing conversations with our wrangler, who is now a friend of ours. Could not recommend any more!! Was so so much fun and Heather is the best :)

I went on the advanced ride first thing in the morning midweek. I rented a car for a day and drove from Waikiki, where I was staying for a conference. The drive took just over an hour and was lovely itself. I was mounted on a nice horse, Remy, a quarter horse, who was responsive and kind. Because I was on an advanced ride, and it was midweek (and very early!), I was the only one out on the ride, which was a lovely treat. I also enjoyed getting to know my knowledgeable and talented guide, Bridget, who, even though she's only lived on the island for a few months so far, could tell me a lot about the plants and animals we encountered and the history of the ranch and the land. Because it was an advanced ride, we did plenty of cantering, but you definitely need to be a strong rider to be able to do so. All of the other rides they take guests on are walking-only rides, and I'm sure these are lovely, too. Just not what I was looking for. So glad I chose this place over the much, much, much larger Kualoa Ranch, which I stopped at briefly on my way back to Waikiki. That place has a Disneyland vibe, while Gunstock is a working ranch with cattle, about 40 head of riding horses, and about 50 boarders.
