First - your tour guide, Kathy, is superb. She's a local, and much like Harvey Milk did, came to the area many years ago for the sense of community. Her standing in it shows - locals wave to her, or come up and give her a hug.
Stopping by the local coffee shop, mid tour - we not only had a great coffee, but got the chance to absorb life in the castro. It's not just a 'coffee' stop (as I had originally thought).
Kathy paints a vivid picture of the castro, both now and in times past. We loved it - my husband (not legally yet) is not easily pleased or impressed, nor is he an activist when it comes to gay rights. He speaks of this tour and Kathy more highly than the statue of liberty, the empire state building, disneyland, mardi gras in new orleans, and getting upgraded to business class on a trans-con flight!! Kathy even tried to refuse us giving her a tip and insisted we didn't buy her a coffee/hot choc... (genuinely!) How rare is that!
After her tour, we found ourselves immersed in the local shops, bars and culture. The book shop she takes you past is particularly worth a browse!
Straight or gay - this tour is a must - Kathy and her ability to immerse you in the local culture, is so unique.
Kathy - we will be back to do the city hall walk soon. Thanks!
