The USS Midway museum was an excellent day out in San Diego. Plan to spend about three hours here exploring all areas of the ship. If you have a sensitivity to smells, please be aware that you can still smell the fuel throughout the ship.
When you walk in, they will photograph your group and give you a self guided listening device that you tap at regularly installed kiosks to hear about the areas you are in. If you prefer to talk to a person, the Midway has many volunteers and former servicemen and women in yellow hats to describe the post they are stationed at. I highly recommend talking to them as they bring the ship to life!
The route is clearly marked inside the ship with a yellow path - and you will need help navigating it. Also, be warned that there are high steps, low ceilings, and steep ladders. Wear appropriate shoes...I wore sliders and the soles stuck to the grip tape on the ladders. I also observed many men banging their heads on the low thresholds.
My favorite part was the flight deck - hard to believe so many planes can fit so compactly.
