My wife and I did this for something to do on a cool October morning. We met our guide, Dean, and started out on the Ultimate Queen City Underground Tour.
A quick note: "Underground" is both literally and figuratively used on this tour!
We started out at historic Washington Park. Dean regaled us with the stories from its inception to the modern day renovation, that was the genesis of the revitalization in OTR (Over the Rhine) district.
Moving several blocks, and along streets topside, we stopped to view other buidlings of significance, still-existing original street signs, and were further informed and entertained by Dean and his extensive knowledge of the local Cincinnati History. This information at each site was clearly the highlight of the tour for us.
We then walked to St. Francis Seraph church which was our most northerly point. We descended interior stairs to the church crypt here multiple graves were moved here from the courtyard where the original church stood prior. Grave stones denoted people born as far as France in the 1700's who moved to Cincinnati which became their resting place! Another headstone lists the cause of death: Cholera! The real personal history here is palpable!
We wrapped up the tour 30 feet underground in the beer storage vaults of the former Kaufman Brewery. (There are few tight, steep steps to take here.) Here Dean informed us of the Cincinnati brewing history, much of which I knew, but much I also did not. He filled in several missing pieces, then wow'd us all with the stats of the day with the total brewing and drinking in Cincinnati!
My wife and I both enjoyed this trip thoroughly, and Dean's colorful presentation of this local history. 5 generations of my family have lived here, and this was another reason for taking this tour. We plan to return for another soon.
