We did a combination tour of Monument Valley and Mystery Valley; this review is for the Monument Valley tour. Yes, you can see some of Monument Valley without a tour, but you cannot experience as much as we did without the tour, and much of Monument Valley you must be with a Navajo guide to see it. You will miss out on so much if you do not tour with Dineh Bekeyah, we couldn't be happier with our tour. The area is absolutely stunning, the mesas and buttes and plateaus are gorgeous. We were so glad to have a private tour, just our family in a full-size SUV with our tour guide, Steven. He was terrific!! Be sure to ask for him! We especially liked the song he played on his instrument and our stop to visit Susie in a traditional Hogan; she braided our daughters' hair - they loved it! Be sure to also tour Mystery Valley, which is less crowded but is just as amazing.

I had no intention of taking a guided tour of the valley, until it was recommended as we checked out of the Lodge at Bryce Canyon. So just before 10 PM we booked this tour on line for the following morning at 8 A.M.! I wouldn't recommend leaving it that late, we were really luck to get what we wanted. We met a young Navajo man the following morning who introduced himself as Derek. As 2 others booked on the tour failed to show, we had a private tour. We drove into the valley on open seats in the back of a Silverado, so dress warmly. In addition to seeing the main sights, we also visited a Hogan, traditional Navajo home where a Navajo lady demonstrated weaving & other crafts. There was no pressure to buy any of the items for sale. The main attraction of the tour was that we got to learn a lot about Navajo culture & history, which you would not do on the self drive tour. We also go to see some additional places not open without a guide. I think the highlight was leaning back to look at the roof of a cave, eroded in the shape of an eagles head, while Derek played a Navajo flute. Recommended without hesitation. We will book a longer tour when we return.

My husband and I have toured all over the Southwest in the area of the “Grand Circle” but we had never been to Monument Valley. We opted to take the 2.5 hour tour and it was so fabulous that we regretted not signing up for the 3 hour. Steven was our guide and it became a private tour since the other people never showed up. Steven is a young Navajo man that we are certain those in his clans are extremely proud of. He was informative, polite, and answered every question we had. By going on a tour, you get to visit places that are inaccessible by driving your own car. We stopped at a native Hogan and watched an elder woman card and spin wool for the rug she was weaving. She also brushed and styled a young touring girl’s hair using a traditional grass hairbrush. In addition to stopping at many of the named buttes, spires and mesas, Steven took us to a natural arch and played an original tune on his flute. What a perfect way to be introduced to the Navajo culture and the wonders of Monument Valley.
