I'll start with the only negative - you have to traverse Shem Creek, which has significant boat traffic (leaving bars, which makes it even worse). I was pretty nervous about crossing the area, as it was my first time in a solo sea kayak. However, the boats were surprisingly considerate of our kayak group. Our guide, Tate, was expert, not only in his knowledge of the natural area around us, but also in his ability to herd us into safe passage anytime we had to traverse the active Shem Creek area. The time we spent paddling in the tidal pool was the most serene and beautiful part of the trip and the favorite of our entire family. It would be great if more of the time could be spent in the creek rather than the congested area, but it was cool to get to experience both. The staff, guide, instruction, safety and friendliness are excellent. We would definitely do it again. I've taken a number of these trips and felt like I was in the most personable, expert and safest hands of any of them. This is more than renting a kayak with someone to go out with you.
I'll also recommend the restaurant two doors down from Coastal Expedition for pre-paddle brunch. Shem Creek Tavern, maybe? It defintely has the word Tavern in it. Spectacular views , perfect for pre-paddle. Then for a drink after the paddle, the Crab House next door. Pick up a drink at the bar and walk down to the floating dock to relax and watch the other paddlers going in and out. A wonderful afternoon.
