On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.
Not recommended for those that cannot walk at least a mile.
Not recommended for those affected by cold/hot weather.

I can’t recommend Red Clay Tours enough. I learned a ton about the civil rights movement, but also about the city of Birmingham itself. While the subject matter is obviously challenging, it is so important to learn about our nation’s history. As a local, Clay is the perfect person for the job. He is passionate, knowledgeable and an excellent story-teller. I’m so grateful that I was able to visit parts of Birmingham that I could never have seen on my own. Take this tour - you won't regret it!

My favorite part of the tour was getting out and actually standing where the atrocities took place. Although we didn’t go inside of any buildings I would have liked to.

Clay was an excellent guide, very well-informed. The tour was well-organized and comprehensive covering so much of the struggle for civil rights in Birmingham up to the late 60s. It was not just a recounting of the more well known events, but also a detailing of the politics that perpetuated the system that denied African Americans their rights. Clay is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about this tour.
