Огляд
On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

As an educator, parent, and person of color, this tour held in it the things that so many citizens, folx who believe in community, and those that hope to live with a sense of hope and justice should seek out in any experience. The balance of real talk, visual history, and humility of Mr. Clay was simply extraordinary. In addition, the named white privilege, role of whiteness and frankly, incredibly need for allyship was named unequivocally by Mr. Clay. My only suggestion is that folx be asked to tip at the end :) and that this tour stay alive, continue, and find a way to spread more widely. The history of our country, and in fact, our continued urgency towards a more inclusive, more intentional, and more loving democratic project requires that we face our history while navigating our own role (myself included) in what we do to both refute and perpetuate the history that Mr. Clay so gently, thoughtfully, and boldly shared.

It was all amazing. I would have to honestly say Clay himself for his thoroughness and depth of knowledge and just wow.

This tour was recommended to us from a German visitor on another tour in Memphis who highly recommended Red Clay, and now I am doing the same! Our guide was the father of this "son and father" company, and it was truly like spending 3 hours with a personable historian who really knows a place intimately and can answer all of your questions with comprehensive detail and clarity. We are a family of four including kids of 17 and 11, and we all learned so much info that just can't be conveyed fully via books, museums, or movies. Our guide took us to the actual places where key events took place, and the impact of standing on these sites while envisioning the past conveyed with passion and context is deeply visceral. The story of "Bomb-ing-ham" during the post-reconstruction and Civil Rights era is horrific but also highlights countless amazing people, adults and children, who had the internal strength to organize, march for justice, and speak truth to power despite the ever-present threat of cruelty and violence. I left with a better understanding of how the past informs challenges today. You will come away from this tour feeling moved, deeply unsettled if not upset and angry, eager to learn more, and motivated to be part of the solution rather than problem in issues of race and social justice today. I recommend this tour for absolutely every U.S. citizen and wish it was a mandatory part of every school's curriculum -- can you imagine what a better country we would have if people knew their own history?
