We planned our (first-time!) trip to Williamsburg months ago; a few days before our visit, we learned that June 19 was free admission day because of the Juneteenth holiday, so that was a pleasant surprise and we visited that day at no charge. We found Colonial Williamsburg to be interesting, and the docents/guides to be exceptional in their presentations and in answering questions from interested visitors. Five stars for all of the staff who do those demonstration/information jobs. However, as a whole, we were slightly disappointed in our visit and thankful that we didn't pay full price for tickets. There is precious little information about most of the buildings (especially those with no program), many of the exhibits were "temporarily closed", at least one that was "closed" according to the website was actually open. And about a third of the exhibits in the art museum were closed. Though we are well-versed in American history and understood the context in which Williamsburg operated, more detail on individuals and sites here would have been very interesting. The 2-sentence plaques on the buildings left us feeling cheated :-) And a heads-up: Not sure it it was unusually busy because of the free admission, or if this is normal, but things requiring reservations (carriage rides, meals) were booked up by mid-morning and many of the buildings that were open had lines of people sitting in the heat waiting to get inside. Plan on a lot of walking, standing, and possibly waiting (all of this is to be expected) and if you want to see/do everything you might need more than a day. Over all, I am glad we came, as this had been on our bucket list for a while....but I am not sure the full admission price is warranted, especially with so much "temporarily closed".
