A potentially great tour undermined by a bad guide unfortunately.
He didn't tell us his name, nor ask ours. Didn't care. Even the bloke at reception was a bit indifferent.
We rode way too fast (passing many, many other tourist cyclists) so couldn't really enjoy the scenery as I'd have liked to. I'm reasonably fit and previously raced triathlons (currently 6 months pregnant), and my husband is an elite cross country cyclist, so it wasn't just me being slow. Guide had the audacity to berate me for going slowly and say that I need to keep up or I'd miss them if he turned off! Sorry buddy, as a guide that's your job to ensure the 4 whole people on the tour keep together!
We stopped at some nice interesting sites which I wouldn't have known about without him, and he was quite knowledgeable about the park's history. The stops were for a bit too long each time. Perhaps more time riding (at a leisurely pace), and less time stopping for photos while you sit on your phone?
Seemed to choose the windiest spots with zero protection to park up to talk each time, including the middle of a pier in the Hudson in howling wind.
Rode a couple of k's into a screeching head wind along the Hudson, then turned up the wrong street (up hill climb) twice to get back on the road home. Perhaps think about changing the direction of travel to suit the wind? Or learning the route first?
At the end, the guide gave a wierd, perfunctory "park your bike here, do you need any directions?" then left us alone and went inside without even a goodbye or anything. Not even offered water or anything (before or after the trip)!
I'm not chasing a surly kid down to give him a tip, so here's my tip now for the business owner... A tour is about your punters. Adapt to the climate and the crowd, keep the pace leisurely, and put some personality into it.
I'd avoid, or ensure the kid from Kentucky doesn't lead your tour.
