We got two guides: Chuck(?) and little Rod, for Rod himself was on his birthday off :) The scheduled time for ice fishing is 10am-2pm, and our guides arrived earlier for setting up everything. We got lucky to catch some fish from beginning, and our guides are patient and attentive about how we were doing. It's kind of cool that that you really see silver salmon and rainbow trouts when they freshly out of water, and that you can really eat them on the (crime? lol) scene. We feel lucky to join this event. If ever I had chance to come back, I would like to try the winter Aurora ice fishing package. Thanks Rod and all your staffs!

On our ice fishing tours you decide which fish you want to keep and eat. We then prepare and cook the fish on the spot for you. You can't get fresher fish. The species of fish we catch are: King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Arctic Char, Rainbow Trout, and Arctic Grayling.

we brought a package of 1 hour snow-mobile + 4 hours of ice fishing for group of 5 adults + 5 kids. we didn't completely get out snow-mobile office till 3 pm, and ice fishing starts at 2:30. By the time, we finally get to the ice fishing at 4pm. we started fishing as a beginner, the person working there told us to drop the string for 5 seconds then just wait there... but .... I know if you do that, you will never catch a fish..... the first fish I caught, the worker didn't hold tight enough, it dropped back to the lake. the second fish we caught, it's around 5:50; he said it's too small , I can't keep it... the third fish we caught, around 5:55, the person who worked there threw it back to the hole without telling us anything. then he explained to us it's too late, they don't cook for us anymore... the whole fishing experience is disappointing... the worker there seems to be tired and wants to go home ...... if you go with kids and wanting to book snow mobile and ice fishing, I strongly recommend you not doing so. and go for some places that welcomes kids.

On all of my combo tours I schedule 30 minutes between tours for the 15 minute drive between tour locations. On this particular tour the group spent 1 hour changing clothes and making drinks after the snowmobile tour ended 30 minutes early. I personally told them that their ice fishing tour was due to start soon. They then spent 1 hour at McDonalds and other locations before arriving at the fishing location. I actually went looking for them since they didn't arrive in a timely manner. The customers on the ice fishing tour before this group; caught over 50 fish with 4 people using the proven techniques. My guides told this customer that we had caught bigger fish all day and asked if they wanted a bigger fish to keep and eat. They replied "We want bigger fish to eat". The small fish was released. 30 minutes before all ice fishing tours end; customers are informed that the remaining fish will be released since there will not be enough time to prepare and cook the fish. I am disappointed we did not meet this customer's expectations. This review is not typical of a customer's satisfaction with our tours.

My husband and I booked a four-hour ice fishing tour with Rod's Alaskan Guide Service and just got back from our trip to Fairbanks. Rod was responsive via email (super helpful and important since we were planning this trip for early in the winter season) and helped us in so many ways. He kept us updated on the progress of the ice (if it wasn't thick enough, wouldn't be able to fish because of the thickness of the ice), and once he was confident of the weather, he told us to go ahead and book online. He also provided the BEST referral for cold weather gear/clothing with Martha at Alaska Element which was how we ended up getting our parkas, mitts, bibs/pants, and boots for the entire trip. You won't necessarily need it IN the cabin/tent, but you will want it walking to/from/etc. Rod provided directions the day before as promised and we were able to follow them easily to meet with his son Rod, who was helpful and friendly. The ice wasn't thick enough for their big "permanent" fishing cabin but he set up a smaller tent with heater and it was totally warm enough for us to even take off our parks and mitts and just fish in our other layers (base layer + sweater layer + ski bib + gloves). It was fun! It was way easier than I expected ice fishing would be (with small rods) but I guess it was a great intro to fishing. There were tons of fish below us though they were a little smaller than I expected, it was still a lot of fun to reel them in. We learned the lake below us was stocked every year with a variety of fish - and we each caught some silver salmon, a small king salmon, char, and lots of rainbow trout. We "got" to keep one each to cook since they didn't want it to get wasted and Rod cooked it for us on a grill right outside (in addition to providing a reindeer sausage/hot dog and seasoning, etc.). We definitely didn't need the full four hours, even with a bunch of time taking pictures of the amazing frozen lake and landscape around, so we were really content with our 2-3 hours there and happy to head out. Such an interesting experience, and one that you can't do everywhere! Would definitely recommend it for a daytime activity while you're in Fairbanks chasing the Northern Lights. Thanks Rod and family!
