Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio

In 1889 Wright completed the construction of a small two-story residence in Oak Park on the Western edges of Chicago. The building was the first over which Wright exerted complete artistic control. Designed as a home for his family, the Oak Park residence was a site of experimentation for the young architect during the twenty-year period he lived there. Wright revised the design of the building multiple times, continually refining ideas that would shape his work for decades to come.

We did a CAC walking tour of FLW Oak Park homes & then did this home & studio tour. Beautiful restoration work. Interesting & amazing.

After touring the inside of the home and studio with a very knowledgeable guide, you can continue the tour with an audio device that offers insight into many of the homes in the area designed by FLW. Definitely do both!

Having been to eighteen Wright structures including Taliesin West in Scottsdale, the Gamage in Tempe, and Fallingwater in Mill Run, my wife and I finally made it to his home and studio. It was noticeable on the tour how Wright progressed in design from earlier concepts to those later incorporated in his classics; horizonal lines, earth tones, and height forced perspectives. Our excellent docent first started with the outside architecture then toured us through the home and later the studio. The children's playroom and gallery was spectacular. It was interesting knowing that Wright patrolled this studio, worked in his office, kept patrons waiting in "the waiting room" and meet with clients and stored documents in the octagonal library. The library was surreal in knowing that decisions were made here that affected our the Wright structures we visited.
