I had wanted to do this tour for over 10 years and finally convinced my friend to do it with me. The tour exceeded my expectations, although I realize it may not be for everyone.
Garl met us at Robert is Here fruit stand, and we followed him into the park. Our first stop was the slog through the Everglades, second stop freshwater kayak tour of lake, and final stop saltwater kayak tour. Garl is extremely knowledgeable and found and discussed plants, birds and animals with ease. He took great pictures, so we could spend our time being in the moment (especially with no cell phone service in the park).
Garl met us at 11:00am and we left Flamingo close to 7:45pm with at least a 45 minute ride out of the park. So prepare yourself for a long, long day. Also prepare yourself for physical exertion. I would rate the slog and freshwater kayaking as intermediate and the salt water kayaking as very challenging. My arms felt as if they were going to fall off by the end. But the sights made it all worth it.
The pace of the tour is very laid back. While we enjoyed it, some people might find it too laid back.
There aren't many tours like this period. In the end we felt we had an adventure and a sense of accomplishment. We won't forget it.
