My daughter, 20 and I, signed up for this adventure. Starting out by meeting at the This Is Robert fruit stand, which is a sizable store, started the day off right. It is a store with great history and then Garl and staff got us signed in. We were there in early December and the weather was great. I would recommend you wear the coats they provide to keep the bugs away and if you have black leggings, you should probably wear the pants they offer, as my daughter found out later, that mosquitoes like black and bit through her pants. However, the experience itself was simply amazing. We walked through the Everglades, in areas where gators travel, in search of seeing wildlife, plant life and to experience nature. It is a very interesting experience, we always felt safe, yet knew what we were looking for......our first leg of the trip lasted over an hour and the walk was at times in water up to your thighs. There were some slippery spots, but it was just plain fun. Garl and his guide-in-training, Erin, both were very informative and we learned so much about the Glades, about alligators and about many other things I didn't even know I was interested in!! From there, we kayaked. Some of the turns in the mangroves were very sharp, and my daughter and I loved learning how to work together to make the turns. And, when we spotted gators in the water, it was just awesome!! We also did an early evening walk and saw some baby gators and a large 10 footer. It was too windy to do the salt water kayak experience and though disappointed, the trip itself was well worth it and Garl charged us for only 1/2 day even though we had a 7-8 hour adventure. We would go back and do this again, it was so fun!!

We knew we didn't want to deal with shopping madness on Black Friday, and getting out into nature seemed the best antidote to that. We chose Garl's Coastal Kayaking for our tour, and we were not sorry! Garl, himself, led our tour, taking us through the water to a cypress dome, where we learned about the plants and animals that live there. Then we took to the water, kayaking on a beautiful lake, edged by mangroves, enjoying the sun, the breeze, and even a very brief rain shower. I can't imagine a better way to spend Black Friday (or any day, for that matter!) Take this tour, and, yes, you'll get wet, and maybe even muddy, but you'll enjoy an experience you can't get anywhere else, with guides who'll find and explain it, to give you an appreciation of the Everglades that people who don't get out into the wetland environment will never have.

If you go to Everglades National Park, and you drive the whole length, from the Royal Palm Visitor Center down to Flamingo and Florida Bay, you can go home and tell your family and friends you saw The Everglades. And technically, that'll be true. After all, it was there, outside your window the whole way. But trust me, you haven't even begun to scratch the surface. You can't see the real Everglades from the road. If you want to experience the real thing, you've got to get out into it, and Garl's Coastal Kayaking is one of the absolutely best ways to do that! Now, to be honest, if your idea of a “nature tour,” is sitting in an air conditioned tour bus, snapping a few pictures through the tinted windows, this might not be the tour for you. But if you don't mind getting your feet wet, and you want to see what the Everglades is all about, there's none better! The staff at Garl's is helpful and attentive, and Garl and his guides are knowledgeable and capable. They want to be sure you have a great tour. Every tour is different, because it's nature, and therefore unpredictable. The weather, the water level in the park, even the abilities and preferences of the guests in each group are all taken into account, and the tour can be altered, or even adjusted on the fly to accommodate all those factors. Be ready to go with the flow, and you won't be disappointed. We started out with a hike through thigh-high water to see a cypress dome. Seeing a cypress dome from the inside is completely different from pointing to it from the road and saying, “There's a cypress dome.” The up-close reality is so much more. It's almost magical to stand in the middle of it as the sun peeks through the branches, reflecting off the water, lighting up the bright green moss on the trees, and glinting off the cypress knees that poke up above the surface. If Mother Nature is cooperating, you might see alligators, owls, apple snails, and snakes. That's in addition to the flora – orchids, bromeliads, sawgrass, and other plants of the wetlands. Whatever is there, Garl and his guides will most likely find it for you! Next up was Kayaking. I firmly believe there's no more peaceful way to enjoy being out in nature. I would have been fine with just paddling around, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, but we also saw several alligators and a crocodile. We paddled through a tunnel of mangroves (beautiful!), and birds sometimes passed overhead, including vultures, osprey, and later we even saw a bald eagle from the road. There was a manatee in the water when we made a stop at the south end of the park road, and also another crocodile (a big guy, too!). All in all, this is a fantastic way to spend a day in the 'Glades, and I'd recommend it enthusiastically to anyone who asked!
