My wife and I visited Yellowstone in late April with temps hovering in the mid 20 - 30s. It was her 1st & my 2nd visit. We’d always heard that to really experience the park you need to get off the beaten path. We chose Yellowstone Hiking Guides’ Lamar Valley Safari Hike, hoping to see more of the park and the various wildlife. Our tour guides were the owners, Josh & Emily Jo. They were very knowledgeable and excellent hiking companions. We were the first tour of the season, but it looks like they book up quickly. The day started at 7am with a drive to the trail head and an excellent start to the day with sightings of two black bears, bison, wolves, coyotes & an osprey sitting in its nest (all before we even hit the trail!). Unfortunately, our hiking plans were altered when a grizzly decided it liked the Lamar Valley trail too (good catch Emily Jo!). Binoculars & a spotting scope were provided, so we all got to see the BIG grizzly bear (really cool!). Our guides made the right decision to abandon that hike (safety first) and we moved on down the road for a different adventure. We ended up hiking around several lakes in the area and enjoyed lunch overlooking the Lamar Valley. We finished up with a hike near the end of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where we watched a fox showing off its recent kill. On the drive back there were more animal sightings, including big horn sheep & a “cinnamon” black bear. All in all, a very enjoyable day. The service was top notch including some pre-trip advice on how we southerners should dress for spring in Yellowstone (layers, layers, layers). We were hesitant at first about hiking so early in the season, but not anymore. The amount of wildlife hunkered down in the Valley before the snow melts was amazing.

I had the most wonderful time with Yellowstone Hiking Guides, and would very highly recommend them. I traveled solo to Yellowstone and was worried about hiking by myself, so I found Yellowstone Hiking Guides to go hiking with and I was so very fortunate to find them! I went on two trips with them with Josh as my guide, and both were beyond amazing where I felt like I was 'off the beaten path' and traveling where few in the park make it. It was the most fun and knowledgable hike I have had in a very long time and I loved every second and will definitely be doing more when I go back at some point. The first hike in the Lamar Valley was closed due to bear activity but Josh didn't bat an eye on a backup plan which took us off the trail to a hidden, recluse lake that was beautiful and serene. We found moose droppings and bear fur + what we think were fox bones on the path which Josh had an eagle eye for and pointed out as he passed so we could look at everything and discuss. And since we still had time we took a second hike on the same day up around the canyon crest which was amazing! This was not a fully created trail but rather felt like a trail that had formed over the years as more people discover it. It was super windy and exhilarating as you were above the canyon looking down on it to 1 side while the other side had grass and flat land with grazing buffalo. My second day spent with Josh and Yellowstone Hiking Guides was for the Lonestar Geyser hike, and this also did not disappoint. Half of the hike was spent in a part of the forest that had been destroyed by the big fire, while the other half was in a part that had not - there was a clear line dividing the fire-damaged area which Josh pointed out and it was fascinating to see the difference. And when we made it to the Lone Star Geyser we only had about a 20 minute wait until it went off and it was fantastic. It is an old geyser with a big burst that was worth every second and should not be missed. All in all you should definitely go hiking with Josh and Yellowstone Hiking Guides!! You will love it.

My wife, two teenage sons, and I spent a wonderful week this past July with Emily Jo and Josh Mahan in Wyoming and Montana. They were our guides on a National Geographic sponsored tour of Grand Teton,Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks. We are so lucky they led our group. They were very well organized, knowledgeable, professional and genuinely enjoyable to be around. All the activities went very well, and Emily Jo and Josh were a big reason. Their knowledge, enthusiasm, and even their personalities added a great deal to my family's wonderful experience. I recommend them enthusiastically!
