This was my third surfing lesson ever (I’m a true beginner) and I absolutely loved it. My boyfriend and I went out alone with James and Church (the amazing surfer dog) and had the best time. The price was right for the lessons (about $56 each) but I will admit the photo package was a bit insane (they charge you $90 for somewhat mediocre pictures — all or nothing). Either way, we would **definitely** come back again to Surf Shack for the lessons and the equipment, as the lessons with James were truly amazing, and the equipment was great. (Note: included in the price is clothing, shoes, and a surf board.) We both were standing up surfing (even holding hands!) by the end! And it was awesome that they let us surf with Church sitting on the board :)

Where else can you find a surfing dog? Church (the dog) is a main attraction, and he does surf and if you are lucky you can surf with him. But what meant so much more to me was that when my daughter sustained a slight injury at the beginning and wanted to get out, not only did Keano stay with her so I could surf, he encouraged her to at least sit on the board. After James got the rest of our group going, he turned us over to Keano and he personally stayed with and surfed with my daughter. She forgot all about her minor bumps and was surfing with him and Church and having a ball. He got her up on her own and even put her on his shoulder once to ride a wave. It was one of the most moving and enjoyable things I have ever done with her and she will remember how kind James (and Church) were to her forever. I will never go anywhere else in Maui for a lesson or rental. These guys are great and made my daughters experience so much more than it would have been if she had gotten out. I am so grateful to them. Mahalo James, Church and Keano you all are NO KA OI!!!!!!

Was in Maui with my parents and sister for a family vacation. First time in Hawaii and never touched a surf board in my life. But since we were here, gotta try the local activities and that includes surfing!! Jay, our instructor was awesome! Got me catching waves instantaneously and coached everyone with a nice positive attitude. She was awesome and highly reccommend to ask for her if you wanna catch a lesson in the surf shack. Great team, great location, safe and perfect for first timers!
