Brought my teen daughter here to cap off a week long father-daughter trip to Hawaii. Wanted to end with something cultural and traditional and felt like this checked the box. And it did.
The food was good and there were some, but not many, well labeled gluten free options. She has Celiac, can’t eat wheat. What we found in Kauai is that a lot of places here use soy sauce and usually not a GF variety. There were a few veggie dishes with no obvious wheat but I could taste the soy sauce in them. So I definitely appreciate the fact that they labeled those accordingly. Just wish maybe there was one veggie dish that did not have soy in it. And maybe a GF dessert. Shaved ice is a thing here, right? Still I will take proper labeling over lack of options, so they get at least 4 stars for that. And the GF fruit, pork, and rice were tasty.
As for the lu’au entertainment itself, I felt like it was solid. Got our money’s worth for sure. The fire dancers were really cool. They told a nice story about Polynesian settlers coming to Hawaii from the PoV of a King’s daughter. Fairly easy to follow. There just weren’t many performers. Interesting, entertaining, but not going to blow your Olukai’s off. Aside from a few craft booths, most of this is indoor, covered. Great if it rains. But if you are expecting a step back in time beach or jungle backdrop, not going to get that.
So, overall, we enjoyed it. Would recommend it. It was good enough but a little room to improve to get from 4 to 5 stars.
