Everyone has to pay the Monument Valley park entrance fee to get in. However, not all the areas are open. You have to join the Monument Valley tour operated by the Navajo tribe, pay the group fee, and they will take you to see these restricted areas by their vehicles.

This was a great trip Don was our guide and could not have been more helpful. He was really interesting on the culture and history of the local native peoples and he talked us through the formation of the rock forms with an amazing sand and water demonstration. He skilfully drove us over the challenging ( and wet) terrain so we could see the amazing sites and explained the meaning of the cliff carvings. This is a trip well worth doing.

If you are staying at Goulding's Lodge during your visit to Monument Valley, or even if you aren't, the best way to see the magnificent geological sandstone formations in the fascinating area known as the "Land of the Long Shadows," is to arrange for a guided tour at Goulding's. All of the guides are local Navajos who grew up in and around Monument Valley and know the landscape and its history better than anyone. They provide access to trails and paths not open to the public. During your tour, you will have the opportunity to stop and gaze at the panorama made famous in Hollywood motion pictures directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne. You have several tours to choose from: the BasicTour, which covers the famous 17-mile loop with stops at John Ford's Point, the East and West Mittens, the Three Sisters, the Totem Pole and North Window and an authentic Navajo Hogan; the DeLuxe Tour, which covers the 17-mile loop and also visits some restricted back-country stops such as The Sun's Eye and Ear of the Wind; the Sunrise Tour, which starts in front of the Mitten rock formations and makes its way through the Valley as the sun casts its light upon the buttes and mesas; the Sunset Tour, which winds its way around the 17-mile loop and finishes in front of the Mittens for the sunlight's last glow; and the All-Day Tour, an eight-hour adventure that covers the 17-mile loop and also includes a barbecue lunch and visits to nearby Mystery Valley with his Anasazi ruins and Hidden Valley.
