My main reason for booking this tour was to see the northern lights. I came to Fairbanks last year and left disappointed because I didn't get to see them. This time around I made better plans and decided this tour was my best chance. I was picked up right at 5pm from in front of my hotel. I can't remember the driver's name but he did the best he could with trying to get everyone to talk and be motivated on the ride there. The drive to Chena Hot Springs took a little over an hour due to major construction on the road. Once we arrived there was a rush to get everyone checked in so that we would have time to visit the Ice Museum. I had put my swim suit on under my clothes but never made it to the hot springs which is fine because I never really wanted to go. As I mentioned before, the lights were my main objective when booking this tour. I did eat at the restaurant though. It took a very very long time to get seated. Our driver had arranged to get a couple of tables for those of us in the group who wanted to eat. Once the tables were ready, there was another long wait just to order the food. Once we put in our orders, there was another long wait to actually receive them. Apparently they don't have enough employees. I'm not exactly sure how much time passed from the time we walked into the restaurant until we paid for our food and left, but I estimate it to be over two 1/2 hours. Maybe 3. I wasn't really hungry but I needed to do something to pass the time and this took up a lot of time. By the time we paid and walked out there were people rushing to get to the hot springs before they closed at 11pm. It was at this time that our driver came and said he wanted to show us something. He walked us out into the front near the parking lot and there they were. The northern lights! The sky was so clear that we didn't even have to get in the shuttle and drive anywhere to search for them. They put on a show right there in front of us. Caution: A few of us learned the hard way about taking pictures at night or in the dark. I had trouble taking pictures with my iPad. Others had smart phones and didn't know how to use them to get a good shot either. So if you plan on taking pictures and videos of the lights, please learn how to use your phone, camera, iPad, or whatever type of electronics you bring. We didn't leave for another 2 hours or so after this because the driver wanted to make sure we all got what we paid for and also to make sure the lights didn't make another appearance. They did! Overall I enjoyed myself and I finally got a chance to see the northern lights and can now check them off my bucket list. Now on to my next adventure.
