Company's van couldn't make it to the top! The van we were provided for this excursion had neither four wheel drive nor studded tires. We encountered ice on the road up the hill to Murphy Dome. After three failed attempts to get up the road, we had to abandon the effort and go to an alternate location, the Cleary Summit. While I laude the decision to give up on Murphy Dome out of safety considerations, it was still an extra half hours in a hot stuffy van. The alternate site, at Cleary Summit is more than six hundred feet lower in elevation than Murphy Dome, and so we ended up under the low clouds held in my the inversion layer. The aurora was present, but barely visible through the clouds. The activity had also slowed from earlier in the evening. A lost opportunity due to less than optimal equipment. Out of fairness, we were told two other companies also failed to reach the top that night.

Hello, Unfortunately, the weather in Fairbanks has been unusually mild this winter, which has created several challenges for local drivers. The ice this year is significantly thicker, and Murphy Dome, in particular, has presented difficulties for businesses in the area. The road is quite steep at the summit, and even with studded tires, it would not have been safe to proceed with the tour. Safety is our top priority for our guests, and we made the decision to err on the side of caution. Although the aurora was obscured by clouds, we believe Cleary Summit remains a premium viewing location, despite the slight difference in elevation. Thank you for your understanding, we do hope you had a great rest of your trip.
