There are as many metaphors to describe what locals call 'down in the Buckskin' as there are people who have been there. I choose the word 'in' because you are literally inside the walls of the world's longest slot canyon.

According to the Bureau of Land Management ('BLM') website, Buckskin Gulch is 16 miles long (around 26 km) from the Buckskin Trailhead to the Paria Canyon and over 500 feet (around 150m) deep at its confluence with the Paria River. There are places in the Buckskin where you are able to touch both canyon walls at the same time.

Buckskin Gulch is a photographer's and hiker's Mecca. Every corner you turn is changing continuously; the cliffs are water-and-wind-sculpted patterns of colors, light and shadows. You may also marvel and puzzle at the meanings of the rock writings (petroglyphs) from the early Archaic period (some are as old as 9,000 years).

It was voted one the top 10 hikes in the world by National Geographic Adventure Magazine a few years back.

Brand was an awesome guide! He was patient, knowledgeable, and pointed out many interesting things along the way. The descent was scary, but you will have a real sense of accomplishment afterward. It was so nice to enjoy the beauty of the gulch with no crowds. We only saw one group passing through the entire time.

This was a highlight of an amazing 10 day Utah/Arizona adventure! We took off nice and early and were the only people in the canyon for the first few hours. Our guide Angie was very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. She let us set the pace and made sure we saw some incredible sections of slot canyon, but was respectful of our desire to keep the hike under ten miles. Angie was such an outstanding guide that we hired her again two days later for South Coyote Buttes.

Our tour guide Yermo was very knowledgeable, kids enjoyed learning about different plants, rocks and we even saw fossils! The experience was exhilarating, we enjoyed our tour of Buckskin Gulch very much. Yermo led us through the ancient Indian path into the canyon with ease. I would recommend anyone thinking of exploring buckskin to definitely do it with Yermo.
