I booked this charter for my son's senior trip since he has always wanted to fish Alaska. I read alot of reviews and most of the companies rated very good, so i decided to call a few of them and talk to someone in person. Talking with Cpt. Mike on the phone I was immediately impressed with his courtesy and professionalism. One of my concerns was whether or not i could book a 6 hour combo trip because it was just the two of us, as most companies like to max out their boat capacities. Mike offered a solution and we were able to agree on a price - SO glad we were able to set it up that way. We had an awesome day fishing! First Alaskan fishing trip for both my son and I, and we will be back! Cpt. Mike was great! Very easy going and put us right at ease immediately - our ship had arrived in port about an hour early but Mike was ready to go when we got there. We headed out to one of Mike's favorite halibut areas and once we had our lines in the water we had our first halibut in the boat in literally 5 minutes. No doubt, Mike KNOWS where and how to fish the Ketchikan waters. We caught and released a bunch of halibut as well as some other non-target species and before we knew it, it was time to head for a new area to try our luck with the salmon. Cpt. Mike took us to an area he liked for salmon, and again, shortly after he got our equipment set up we were bringing in the salmon. All too soon we were out of time and had to head back to our ship, but not before Cpt Mike took us to the processors dock to get our fish shipped back home, and as an added bonus, my boy got to see one of his good high school buddies who is working for the processor this summer. Hopefully, we can get back soon and spend a couple of days fishing next time. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Capt. Mike and The Alaska Catch! Thanks Mike!

When we scheduled the trip we knew we were a little early for the Salmon season (about a week or 2) and were advised by captain Mike that if we wanted the best chance at catching fish, Halibut would be the best option. So that's what we were signed up for. But upon heading out for the Halibut my husband asked Captain Jimmy if it was possible to switch course and go for salmon. Captain Jimmy said it was our trip and was happy to do whatever we requested but also stated we might be too early. We decided to take the chance and it paid off!!! He took us to a spot called Lucky Cove and it's name says it all. We caught 3 large King Salmon, one was over 3 feet and the other 2 were just under 3 feet. We also caught 3 very large pink salmon. Captain Jimmy was great! I think he was just as excited about us catching the large fish as we were. We all had a great time and would do it again.

First and foremost, I will say that I made the choice to go with The Alaska Catch charter services based on Trip Advisor reviews, so I find the obligation to provide my experience to the same location for others doing as I did. Also, I’m no stranger to ocean fishing in Northern California out of the Bodega Bay area, but having done a google image search for “Ketchikan Halibut”, I may have come in with some level of expectations for fishing in Alaska. Let me start with communication with Captain Mike. Mike was very good about communication and I shared with him that it was my son’s first ocean fishing adventure and that we were interested in fishing for Halibut and if there was enough time, we’d switch over to King Salmon. On the phone and email communications, Mike seemed to have a keen understanding and also help build up the anticipation of Halibut Fishing trip. We had every intention to limit out on halibut and then switch over to catch one or two salmon, head back to town and have the whole catch filleted and shipped home. Little did we know that belief was more of a dream compared to what actually happened. The day that our cruise ship arrived in Ketchikan, we were greeted by another Captain named Jimmy. We did, indeed see Mike on the way to Jimmy’s boat, but that was the last we would see of him. After we squared away all the licensing matters, we had to inform Jimmy that we were looking to fish for Halibut (Note: If the captains are to work together and share clientele, please communicate between each other, so that client isn’t having to begin from square 1 with a different Captain). We got underway but after a 20-minute ride, the target “pinnacle” that Jimmy had in mind wasn’t going to be accessible in his boat due to conditions. So, we turned the boat around, took another 10-minute trip to another spot (a spot we had passed on the way out). Jimmy was quick to bait hooks and teach each of our party how to drop the lines down. Within 2 minutes, my son was reeling up his first ocean fish, a small rock fish (probably 11-12 inches). Then we managed to get 1 rather small halibut (about 26-27 inches). At that point, were on track. From there, we got another rock fish, moved the boat. Then caught 2 yellow eyes, and then moved the boat again. Not that it matters, but we also caught around 7 sharks in the previous 2 locations. (see picture for our total catch of 5 fish) And in our final location, we spent another hour or two just sitting in a random spot with no bites, while Jimmy untangled and reset some of the tackle. I want to make this next point abundantly clear, so I purposely spaced it into another paragraph… when your clientele is not getting any bites and they have retreated to the cabin, perhaps speed up what you’re doing and find the clients another fishing spot. Also, during our trip, Jimmy attempted to steer us over to Salmon trolling 3-4 different times. I guess he missed the part about us wanting to catch Halibut. I understand that Ketchikan is the “Salmon Capital of the World”, but I thought I was abundantly clear with Mike leading up to the trip. Needless to say, I was a bit annoyed and disappointed with Mike on this one. For my son, he entered the venture with zero expectations, so this fishing trip was the highlight of his entire Alaskan cruise, so I’m very happy about that. However, that’s about where it stops for me. I had much higher expectations from Alaska fishing. Again, I know that there is little-to-no control over weather/sea/fish-biting conditions, but frankly speaking, I’m incredibly disappointed by the size of the fish we were pulling up as well as the lack of fish we walked away with. Each of my trips out of Bodega Bay have yielded bigger and more fish than what we pulled in Alaska. So, for those doing the research that I did, beware that the pictures you see of Alaska Halibut fishing aren’t the norm. I would have probably been better off spending my money on another Ketchikan experience and went halibut fishing when I got back home. We live and learn. I will say thank you to Jimmy for a safe trip to and from the dock on a clean boat.

Billk0811, It’s important for our business to get an understanding of our clients expectations before booking a charter, as we pride ourselves on the ability to meet and exceed them. If we feel that we cannot meet your expectations, then we will help you find another option. It’s fair to say you had very high expectations on both the size and number of Halibut you were anticipating to catch after speaking with you about your experience with us. As mentioned in your review and again over the phone, this trip was the highlight of your sons Alaska cruise vacation and he cannot stop talking about it. I’m really happy to hear this. For most of our clients, watching their son catch his first Alaskan halibut, a limit of rockfish, and multiple spiny dogfish would be considered an excellent day, especially considering the weather conditions. Ketchikan is located in area 2C of Alaska. The 2019 Halibut regulations in this area for guided anglers are one fish daily under 38 inches or over 80 inches. Most of our Halibut this year are running 26” to 38” (8 to 25lbs) We do catch a few Halibut in the “slot” between 30 and 135lbs that must be immediately released. These “slot” Halibut are generally females and the breeding stock that ensure the future of our halibut fishery. Additional information on Alaska Halibut fishing regulations can be found at: fisheries.noaa.gov You booked the six hour Halibut and Salmon combo charter with us. This is one of our most popular fishing charters as it gives our clients the flexibility to fish for multiple species. If weather conditions or fishing patterns are not ideal for one specie, we have the ability to switch over and focus on another. On the day of your charter the most productive halibut grounds were not fishable due to weather conditions. Safety is our upmost concern. Our guide was able to take you to a calm and safe location and catch a multiple number of species including Halibut. The option to switch over and go Salmon fishing was offered and also declined, as you mentioned. Captain Jimmy was your guide on this excursion. He is a born and raised Alaskan with years of fishing experience including both sport-fishing and commercial. He could work for any company in town. Being the dedicated, loyal, and hard-working guide that he is, he choose to work for The Alaska Catch. We are lucky to have him and the level of professionalism, attention to detail, and situational awareness that he brings onboard every charter. Eight other guides from various companies left City Float Marina and went out Halibut fishing on this particular morning. Jimmy was the only guide to bring a Halibut back to the dock. If you make it back into Ketchikan, and to our potential clients looking to maximize the size and number of fish caught, consider a multi day 8 hr combo fishing package. Fishing multiple days for an extended time frame allows us to run further and stay longer at the most productive and least pressured locations. Thank you for your review and speaking with me on the phone. This will help us improve and address potential expectation issues with our clients in the future. Kind regards, Mike Fleece, Owner The Alaska Catch 907-617-9585
