Серфінг - Груповий урок - Вайкікі, Оаху

Огляд
Learn to surf on this 2-hour group lesson on Oahu.  Join a group of students and discover how to ride the waves like some of the Island's most famous celebrities with the help of a certified, professional instructor.  We have small student to instructor ratio of 1 instructor for every 3-4 students.  Waikiki Surf Lesson starts a 10 minute safety slide show inside our surf shop, followed by heading to the beach and practicing on the sand for another 10 minutes.  In our 20 year experience, we know that surfing is muscle memory, so when first timers master their surf stance then they tend to get up on their very first wave.

I had a few hours available and decided to try a surfing lesson. I checked TripAdvisor of course and found two companies that sounded good. This one had afternoon lessons available - I called and they said they could take me the same day. Booking was quick. The driver was late getting me at my hotel by about 5 min, the doorman said they are often late. But it's Hawaii time so no worries for me. The shop quickly got me into reef shoes and a rash guard. I did a private lesson but I think a small group would be fine. I went with the private because I'm right in that "middle age" bracket and figured I'd be more likely to learn if I were on my own! My instructor was great. We had a few minutes on land when he told me what to do, and then out we went. I was surprised at how quickly we headed out, but on the very first try I managed to stand up briefly! My instructor pushed me so I'd catch the wave, he called to me when to do the steps for standing, and then called when I should get down (if I hadn't fallen off by then). By the end of our hour or so in the water, I was doing pretty well. I want to do another lesson so I can learn how to catch the wave myself instead of him pushing me to catch it! I can see how this is a totally addictive sport...

A little hard to find the shop, behind the Starbucks off Kalakaua Ave. The staff were beyond amazing and friendly! I decided to go with these guys because of the reviews, and was I ever glad I did! The other schools are waaaay too busy with waaaay too many people in the water. The team at HH Surf had my teenagers out in the water at 9am after a 10 min land lesson and they didn't come back in until 11am. $75 each plus tax (only $49 in the summer) My teens gave it a 9 and a 9.5 on a scale of 10 for the 'fun factor'. Also found the coupons in the various magazines on the street for a free t-shirt each. Hans had a photographer at the end of the pier with one of those 'paparazzi' cameras - ended up buying the $30 CD loaded with photos of my kids and cool Hawaii stuff. What an all around amazing experience. Just like previous reviews - given the special t-shirts to protect the chest while surfing and water shoes to protect the feet during the lesson. Search out this place.... you'll be glad you did!

We were on Oahu for just a couple of days and wanted to learn to surf, but weren't sure we'd have time. We ended up having some extra time, so called Hans Hedemann in the morning and were able to get a lesson for our family of four (mom and dad, two teenaged boys) that afternoon. The lesson was two hours, and since we were right there in Waikiki, the whole thing took only about 3 hours instead of half a day- we just didn't have that much time. What a great experience! Their shop is located across from Waikiki beach down by the Honululu Zoo, and they teach the lessons there, although i think you can make arrangements with them to take you other places. They provided rash guard shirts and reef shoes (VERY necessary, as we came to find out!) and we walked out to Waikiki beach right there. My husband (50) and i (47) are not the athletes we envisioned ourselves to be in our youth- i'd say "couch potato" describes us both pretty accurately! Neither we nor our two teenaged boys had ever surfed, nor are we snowboarders or skateboarders. However, with the great instruction that we were provided, i was able to stand up and ride a wave the first time i tried (yay Mom!) and also each subsequent time, and its not like i am in good shape! I'm definitely not! The boys were able to get up the second time they tried and each subsequent time, and my husband was able to get up and ride too! I think it was a little tougher for my husband as he's 6'5" and about 240 lbs, so he can't pop up quite as easily. I think if they can teach our family to surf, they could teach literally ANYONE to do it. We had a GREAT time- it was probably the most fun we had on our vacation. The only "heads up" i'd give -- to us, the water was COLD! (we did this at the end of February) But the rash guard shirts helped retain your body heat amazingly well. Also, they make you wear reef shoes and they warn you that it is a rocky and uneven, not sandy bottom- and they were NOT kidding! It literally goes from a hole, to rocks at knee level (or above, for me, since i'm only 5'2"!) You really have to watch where you are going if you are walking your board out at all. If you fall off the board, they warn you to fall flat off like a belly or back flop instead of diving or jumping feet first. It was easy to see that you could really hurt yourself if you didn't heed their instructions. My husband scraped his knees up on the rocks when he wasn't paying attention. Also, if you are out of shape like we are, it is very tiring! My husband's and my arms were sore from paddling the board out and our ribs were sore from throwing ourselves up on the board! We are going to start exercising when we get home! :) Do look in the "Oahu This Week" or other coupon periodicals, they almost all have a coupon for a free t-shirt from the surf school- so bring that with you and get a free t-shirt! All in all it was a GREAT experience! I'd highly recommend it! We really had fun, the instructors were so good that they made it much easier than we thought it would be, and now we can say we learned to surf at Waikiki beach!
