The donut shops we visited were diverse and the donuts were DELICIOUS! We were saddened that we were prohibited from entering any of them, however, and dismayed by the information conveyed by our guide, Shauna, which didn’t focus on the donuts or the shops, was riddled with obvious errors (the Boston Tea Party took place in 1713; Michael Dukakis was single-handedly responsible for cleaning Boston harbor, and lost the presidency specifically because it was dirty). We were also startled by some of the content on which our guide chose to focus — our tour group was about one third under-13 children, and Shauna stopped us to describe how all drivers in Boston are “known as massholes,” gathered us to explain how all Bostonians “sit around pleasuring themselves” after a sports win. She also seemed ill-prepared, giving us crumpled Taco Bell napkins and promising us there would be bags to carry leftover donuts, and then revealing she had no bags at all.
