  • Infants are required to sit on an adult’s lap
  • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
  • Check-in is 15 minutes prior to start time.
  • If the guest needs a wheelchair lift equipped bus, then special arrangements need to be made with the supplier. This must be arranged 48 hours prior to tour date. Contact details will be on your voucher.
  • Guests visiting Whitney using a wheelchair will have access to the gift shop, restrooms, and museum. The plantation grounds are accessible; however, there are uneven gravel paths. The main house tour is not accessible to guest traveling in wheelchairs and is not required to be modified as it is a historic home; however, the first floor is accessible. Guests would be able to view the slave quarters, but would not have access to enter.

Whitney Plantation was a working plantation up until the 1960s or 1970s where the descendants of the enslaved people still lived and worked. The self guided tour explained the early life of the enslaved Africans focusing completely on what their lives were like and how little we know about them as individuals who lived and died there. It was very educational and sobering— and is a part of our history that is often overlooked or glossed over. It was an excellent experience for all ages.

First off the photo of the house on the ad isn't even the whiteny plantation, so that's very misleading and was disappointing as there isn't even an antebellum style house on the property. The tour itself was self guided with an audio device and no actual tour guide, it was educational, mostly about the history of the slave trade and how it came to be in Louisiana. Our bus driver was very educational though and showed us some other cool mansions along the way and had a lot of facts and suggestions of places to go in New Orleans, but honestly that's the only part I liked.
