Where else are you going to get pulled by dogs training for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest, and in the summer, no less? Michelle Phillips' mushers camp was a once in a lifetime experience for our family of five (my husband and me, and our kids--17, 19 and 22). We loved the 1.6 mile ride (Michelle, an Iditarod competitor, was our driver with her "A Team" dogs--hooray!), and spent as much time with the puppies and young dogs that need to be socialized as possible. Gorgeous weather, and the dogs love your attention (and dog biscuits!). We enjoyed the presentation that went over all the equipment you needed--it was really interesting to see what goes in to such a long race. Lots of younger kids on this excursion, and they really loved it as well.
Truth be told, we were concerned at first about the long bus ride. BUT Mike, our wild and crazy guide, was a hoot (a free spirit to be sure), and if you think about taking the train from Skagway, you never get a chance to get off and take photos. With the bus and Mike, we got to stop for snacks, take photos at BOTH the Welcome to Alaska and the Yukon signs, as well as stunning Tutshi Lake (where Mike went swimming...had to be seen to be believed!). Also, he continued his tour guide talk both ways up and back--no sleeping on this tour!
Great tour, excellent experience that we won't forget. Our family voted it #1 of our excursions.
