2.5-Hour Denali Wilderness ATV Adventure Tour

Overview
Get ready for an adventure in the Alaskan wilderness with an ATV tour from Denali. On an automatic single or double ATV, you'll ride along trails surrounded by Denali National Park at speeds up to 30 mph (48 kph), and make stops to enjoy 360-degree views of the Alaska Range, Otto Lake, and the Healy Valley. Traverse rocky creek beds and splash through the water (weather permitting) as a guide leads you through the rugged terrain and provides opportunities for photography. Wildlife is abundant, so watch for moose on the trail. When booking, select from several departure times and decide whether you want a single or 2-passenger side-by-side ATV.

This review is based on information from my 73 year old husband. I did not do this activity as I was experiencing some back issues. Because of the rough terrain this may not be the best kind of activity if you have back problems. I booked this before leaving home. It was part of a combo package that also included flight seeing with landing on Denali/Mt. McKinley with Fly Denali. The cost of the 2 excursions was $540 for my husband. If you just book the ATV the cost would be $105 per person and the Fly Denali one was $524. Booked separately the cost would total $629 so it was a bargain to book both together. The ATV ended up costing $16. This company does several combo tours. Besides the ATV/flight combo there's ATV/rafting combo, ATV/jeep combo, and ATV/husky homestead combo. Or you can choose just the ATV tour and there are several choices-Denali Wilderness Adventure, Stampede Ridge Adventure, Midnight Sun Adventure, Denali ATV Explorer which is a personalized tour. The equipment determines cost. Single rider ATVs are Grizzly-cheapest- or Ace which accommodate a single rider or multi rider ATVs like side by side for up to 3 or side by side crew for up to 6. All the ATVs are 4-wheel drive, automatic transmission. The side by sides have a roof and a windshield. My husband settled on the Grizzly ATV and the Denali Wilderness Adventure. This tour lasted around 2 1/2 hours. He chose the 9:00 am time slot for 8/14/15. The company e-mailed us a tour voucher with all the necessary information. He would be picked up at our hotel-McKinley Chalet-at 8:55 am and dropped off there afterwards. (The company's office is right across the street so when we arrived my husband checked in with the office the night before and decided on no pick up/drop off-he would just walk over to the office). On the voucher was information as to what you should wear or bring. They will provide rain gear for single rider ATVs if it's raining. Wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty is recommended. Driver's license. Helmet, goggles, and gloves are provided. Closed toe shoes/boots/sneakers are mandatory. You can also bring camera, binoculars, video camera if you want. My husband took a small point & shoot camera. The trails that he rode along are outside of Denali National Park with stunning scenery. Stops included views of the Alaska Range, Otto Lake, and the Healy Valley. He drove through some rocky creek beds and splashed through water and mud. Through ditches, over boulders, sideways flying! His words, not mine! He said there were times he thought the ATV would break in half! There were 3 guides for his group of around 15 vehicles. His guide was Aaron. He said there were single riders, doubles, and a few that had 4 in the ATV. Sometimes wildlife can be spotted but it's not guaranteed. He didn't see any wildlife on his trip. My husband said he had a blast-so much fun. The guides took pictures and you can buy one if you decide to do so as a memento of your experience. My husband bought a funny picture of him trying to get through patch of mud for $10. He said it was a terrific time and he was so glad he did it.

My friend and I booked a trip to Alaska on a whim and booked a combo tour with Denali ATV Adventures and Denali Raft Adventures. I'd never ridden and ATV before, but the team of Zack, Drew and Jesse were patient and helpful to make it a great first experience. The combo tour comes with the Wilderness Adventure ATV Tour. The tour was about 2 hours. We made 3 stops, one overlooking Lake Healey, one with great views of the back of Denali National Park and one in Dry Creek. The first 2 stops have stellar views of the Alaska Range but the last was likely the most fun as we scoured for gold and jade and got to do some puddle jumping. The guides were not only great ATV teachers, they each gave a bit of geological, historical and local perspective at each stop. I was nervous going into the tour, but by the end I was sad it was over and would 100% book a longer trip next time. Don't forget to bring cash to tip the guides (we made this mistake - sorry guys!!)!
