My family (two adults and three boys aged 16,15, and 12) just completed a 3.5 week tour of 10 National Parks, several national monuments, and various other sights. Our experience at Monument Valley, and particularly the guided tour we took, ranked either at the top or very near the top of the trip for all five of us. Our guide Joseph was very informative and provided lots of interesting information. The 2.5 hours went by very quickly and at the end of the tour I was wishing that I could just listen to Joseph talk and share his wisdom and knowledge for an entire day.

With so many tour operators available, I feel we really scored with a great tour experience. Our guide, Derrick, a local, who grew up in the area provided us with a really awesome experience, while we enjoyed the beauty and magic of Monument Valley! The open-air tour trucks pick up in front of the View Hotel (where we stayed - fantastic lodging!) The narration begins immediately with a detailed and through history of the area. What really makes the tour specials was not only Derrick's knowledge of the area, but his unique understanding and explanation of what makes Monument Valley so special to the Navajo people! It really comes through by the way he shares personal family stories while growing up in the area as a child and into his young adulthood. We also really enjoyed his flute playing at a certain point during the tour in a location that is very serene and special. I noticed that several other tour operators who came upon us as we were leaving that area did not have flutes, so those groups missed out on a special element of the tour. Also, Derrick's command of the Navajo language is really stunning! There are multiple stops along the tour, each very unique and interesting. There was no rush nor hurry to get to the next stop and there are cold water bottles available in the truck. There are a couple areas where you can purchase items made by the Navajo people that are quite inexpensive and a wonderful way to remember the experience and to help support the Navajo people. We unexpectedly met the owner/operator, Charlene, the day before our trip at the shop she runs very near the View Hotel. She is very gracious, kind, and friendly! I would definitely recommend Dineh Bekeyah Tours for a very special experience in Monument Valley! Finally, consider taking a late afternoon tour; its much cooler than the earlier tour times, and as sun goes down, you get great lighting changes for photos. Best part - there's hardly anyone else out on the trails and you feel alone, which is perfect for being in such a majestic space! Enjoy!
