Overview

The Bender family continues a 50 year tradition of traveling in open air style safari vehicles north of Corolla along the ocean and sand dunes on a 2 hour, small group, excursion sharing history and ecology along the way. We stop for several photo opportunities and points of interests along the way, as well including private access to the Wild Horse Conservation Area. This tour also included a professional and knowledgeable horse guide to educate you on what you are seeing. Choose from one of 3 departure times when you book.

For now, we will allow maximum capacity ONLY for one family or group per household if staying together in the same rental house. Otherwise, the maximum will be TWELVE (12) people.

If you have more than 12 people please call us directly for accommodations.

We will NOT be able to allow any children UNDER 40 POUNDS on the tour.

Brad was an engaging, knowledgeable and fun tour guide. We were able to see the wild horses and enjoy the scenery. We won’t forget this truly remarkable experience for a long time.

This was a typical open-air 4x4 truck with 2 long benches for seating and a covering overhead. The tour operator takes you from the appointed meeting place to the 4WD-only beach, and drives out on it a few miles then takes you behind the dunes on several of the sand/dirt roads looking for horses. We saw five "bachelors" behind the dunes - no harems or herds - and they were all beautiful animals. I was able to get plenty of pictures, since the driver circled around multiple times so everyone could get a look. The only thing I found difficult was that it was chilly (55 degrees) when we went, and when you are sitting in the open air driving on the beach it feels MUCH colder. Make sure to bring a jacket and wear pants. A sweatshirt with a hood is a good idea too in these lower spring temperatures. I don't know if this is always done, but about half way through the tour, we made one pitstop at a park where a bathroom was available. Also, be prepared for the ride to be a little bouncy and bumpy as you will be riding through uneven terrain on sand and dirt roads; however, the driver navigated these areas slowly to try to minimize the bumpiness. Overall this was a good experience worth doing! I recommend it to others who want to get a look at the wild horses of Corolla. (Unless you have your own 4WD vehicle, you won't see them otherwise as they are fenced into the 4WD beach area.)
