2 Hours | Portland Hidden Histories Walking Tour

Overview
Meet Portland and the people—of all backgrounds and identities—whose wit and grit have made her who she is today. Your locally-raised tour guide will captivate you with extraordinary, exciting, and surprising stories about the hardy folks who destroyed and rebuilt Portland time and again over 400 years while you stroll historic streets past spots you’ll surely want to come back to explore. We’ll see where Indigenous Wabanaki leaders made their earliest relationships with European colonizers and walk through the centuries in the historic Old Port and working waterfront.

The Portland Hidden Histories Tour includes 2 hours of entertaining and enlightening historical narration over a 1.5-mile route through downtown Congress Street, the Old Port, and working waterfront along Commercial Street. Owner and guide, Dugan Murphy, takes guests to the most intriguing landmarks and presents an inclusive collection of hidden histories not included on other tours.

Highly recommend this knowledgeable, well-organized and engaging walking tour. Dugan is an excellent guide. We came away with a greater sense of the city’s fascinating history and an appreciation for its firefighters past and present. You’ll have to take the tour to understand. Excellent restaurant recommendations too. Thank you, Dugan!

Dugan was an absolute delight, not to mention his incredible vast knowledge of the history of Portland. Our tour started right on time and all 8 of us stayed close and enjoyed all the stops around Old Port. We walked up and down many Portland streets with Dugan telling us interesting history about each stop. The old Unitarian church visit was especially fascinating. We each got to hold a 25 lb. cannon ball that was fired at the old church during the Civil War. My wife and I were almost the only ones to hold the huge iron projectile. John Ford Square, quaint Wharf Street, the old harbor area that is still used today by the lobster fishermen were really very informative pauses. The tour concluded very conveniently near our restaurant of choice for dinner that night. What an absolutely spectacular Friday afternoon! We don’t feel that you will be disappointed. Plus, it is darn good exercise. As so often happens now, we were the oldest couple attending. It was such fun and what superb history we learned about Portland.
