2 Hours | Portland Hidden Histories Walking Tour

Overview
Meet Portland and the people—of all backgrounds and identities—whose wit and grit have made her who she is today. Your locally-raised tour guide will captivate you with extraordinary, exciting, and surprising stories about the hardy folks who destroyed and rebuilt Portland time and again over 400 years while you stroll historic streets past spots you’ll surely want to come back to explore. We’ll see where Indigenous Wabanaki leaders made their earliest relationships with European colonizers and walk through the centuries in the historic Old Port and working waterfront.

The Portland Hidden Histories Tour includes 2 hours of entertaining and enlightening historical narration over a 1.5-mile route through downtown Congress Street, the Old Port, and working waterfront along Commercial Street. Owner and guide, Dugan Murphy, takes guests to the most intriguing landmarks and presents an inclusive collection of hidden histories not included on other tours.

We had an amazing 'Portland Hidden History Tour' with Dugan, so glad we took the time during our visit to do this. Who knew Portland had so much hidden history? Dugan was enthusiastic and passionate, exactly what you want with a tour guide, and happily answered all of our questions. Next trip to Portland we're signing up for the African-American tour... or the Women's tour... or, maybe both. Even if you don't think you are into tours, do it. Dugan's tour allowed us to get a lay of the land, some history, and the opportunity to engage in fun, thought provoking conversations.

This was a great walking tour. We got a good feel for this part of the city, learned a lot of interesting history with food for thought that is relevant in today's world. And it was very fun! Dugan has so much to share and is super kind, insightful, thoughtful, and fun.

We had a great time on the Hidden Histories Tour! Dougan has great energy; it is clear that he is passionate about history, and the whole experience was very warm and friendly. Even though we live in Portland, we learned a ton about the political, social, economic, and architectural history of the city. These topics were woven together with narrative coherence that made the tour engaging and easy to follow. We particularly liked the amount of Black and Women's history included, specifically the narratives that women and people of color exercising agency. We would definitely take out-of-town (or in-town) friends on this tour, and look forward to taking Dougan’s other tours!
