2 Hours Shem Creek Safari Kayak Tour

Overview
Explore Charleston's most iconic creek by sea kayak to see native wildlife and learn about the local history. As we paddle past oyster-lined marshes and down by the shrimp boats, we'll see animals like bottlenose dolphins, pelicans, egrets and more. In the summer months, manatees and sea turtles call this creek home, too! Coastal Expeditions guides lead you on this adventure, while making sure that the experience is safe and fun for all ages.

Shem Creek Park
Historic Shem Creek is one of the most iconic spots in Charleston and is known for its shrimp boats, seafood restaurants and wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins frequent this creek and will often breach just feet away from your kayak. In the summers, manatees call Shem Creek home and loggerhead turtles will occasionally pop above the surface. As you pass by the shrimp boats and oyster-lined marshes, you see Charleston Harbor and the Holy City Skyline. The Netflix show Outer Banks films on Shem Creek and your guide can show you familiar places where Pogues hang out!

The whole experience was brilliant! The instruction was clear and thorough and we all enjoyed the kayaking. Navigating through the channels and being up close to the flora and fauna gives a whole new perspective to this very special landscape. Our Guide, Jackie, was amazing - her knowledge, enthusiasm and humour was much appreciated and we learnt a great deal on the ecology and nature of the salt marshes. What a privilege to see such an abundance of wildlife, including pelican, snowy egret, little blue heron, osprey, fiddler crabs and much more. We couldnā€™t recommend this trip highly enough.

We've been coming to Charleston for years and have experienced many beautiful areas with lots of good tour companies but keep coming back to and having the best trips with Coastal Expeditions. There equipment and guides are top notch. This time we took a 3 hour kayak tour thru creeks and the harbor. Chance, our guide and naturalist was informative, easy going and fun. He pointed out many interesting birds and plenty of sea life. Seeing dolphins right next to our boat was a highlight. This company is our go to based on equipment but mostly staff. Great job Chance! Looking forward to our next adventure with you.

First off, all of the staff that we interacted with were so friendly and helpful. It's like we were friends already. Cat and Olivia gave very specific details on the phone concerning the tide, directions and what the current navigation time was. They didn't rush or say "just come visit" like other places I talked to. At the marina in Shem Creek (Mount Pleasant) the check-in was super easy and they offer a key basket so we didn't have to risk losing our key fob or getting it wet. Graham was a great help in donning and adjusting our life jackets and giving a brief explanation of the paddles and loaned us a dry bag at no extra cost. He even helped us in the kayak and pushed us off into the water. No chance of the embarrassing entry I've had other places. The kayaks are well equipped with bungies and tie points to keep your gear secure and the seats are flexible and adjustable instead of the hard plastic seats. We headed up through the residential neighborhood first to get aquatinted to the water and kayak. Since we went at low tide, we were only able to go about a couple of miles because we kept getting stuck on the oyster banks. The harbor side is very fascinating and offers very up close views of the boats, birds and restaurants. We did venture out to the island and took Graham's "money saving tip" not to get on the bird sanctuary. We were there just in time to see two dolphins cross in front of us and two massive cargo ships in the near distance. I would definitely do this again and highly recommend Coastal.
