One activity on our To Do list for our recent Florida visit was an airboat ride. Zipping over the water and weeds at high speed seemed to us a uniquely Florida experience that we could not afford to miss. The prospect of seeing an alligator or two up close just added to the appeal. We became aware of Boggy Creek Airboats from their brochure at the resort we were staying at. Turned out they were just a few minutes away, so when the skies cleared after a day of heavy rain, we decided to check them out. The recent cool weather seemed to have slowed business a bit, but we learned that the boats were still operating, so we purchased tickets for the next 60 minute tour. We were joined by three others and our pilot Wayne. The boat has the capacity for 17 so this trip was like a private tour. We were all dressed warmly. Wayne was wearing a parka. Warm clothes needed this time. Even though the sun was shining sometimes, once the boat got up to speed, the wind chill was very noticeable. Despite the cold breeze, the ride was exhilarating! Wayne demonstrated the amazing capabilities of the airboat to operate in shallow, weed choked water effortlessly. Our tour included the near shore of the south end of Lake Tohopekaliga, which we discovered is a very large lake. Wayne was able to scout out some alligators for us to view. They seemed listless as they tried to warm themselves in the tentative sunlight we were experiencing. But they were definitely aware of our presence. This Florida experience met our expectations and is highly recommended!
