45 Minute Semi-Submarine Tour of Catalina Island From Avalon

Overview
Come aboard Catalina Island's newest semi-submarine, the SS Nautilus, and enjoy a deep sea adventure 1,000 leagues beyond your imagination. The main attraction of this unique vessel allows six feet underwater viewing while staying dry so eager seafarers can get up close and face-to-face with schools of fish anticipating treats fired away from custom designed fish food torpedo buttons. Designed after America's first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, the 45-minute journey is the destination itself as our captain and his crew ventures out on an exploratory mission to the undersea gardens of Avalon Bay.

I'd highly recommend this tour for kids. Most of the little ones enjoyed the aquatic life experience during our tour. They take you 6 Feet under and the submarine doesn't submerge completely, so what you get is similar experience of snorkeling. The view wasn't clear and the types of fish weren't great. Overall we were quite disappointed with the experience. There's a $4, $8 and $12 feeding the fish package which gets the fish come close to your window. I think we probably saw 3-4 varieties of aquatic life. We were kinda bored by the end of our tour.

7 & 10 y/o grandkids had a blast. Be prepared to buy food to feed the fish. Sound system was a bit fuzzy so I couldn’t understand what the docent was saying. Still don’t know bwhat kind of fish I saw, but it was interesting.

We had signed up for the first glass bottom boat tour of the day. While we were waiting on the pier, an employee approached to ask if we were willing to switch to the submarine trip, without any extra charge. It was a fun way to see fish and the novelty of feeding the fish from the submarine was a delight.
