The ground of the Royal Kona Resort are beautiful- right on the water. You are also able to watch the sun set right after dinner before the show starts. I would recommend either upgrading your seats to reserved or getting there early so you can get a good seat close to the stage. And wear sunscreen! The sun can be a bit brutal until it sets. My husband and I were traveling with my parents and aunt, we all had a very nice evening.

My husband and I went to the Royal Kona Luau with friends while visiting the Big Island. Having attended other luaus in the past, this one was pretty typical but was in a beautiful setting beside the sea with a spectacular sunset. The show was definitely the best we had attended. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that the food was just mediocre (pretty much the same as at any luau). Still worth attending and make sure to book in advance. And guys, spring for the flower leis as they were beautiful and fragrant!

First time in Hawaii so we wanted to experience a luau. Maybe my expectations were too high but we found this one to just be OK. The line up to get in was very long but it did move quickly once it started. Then they direct you over for photos that you can buy at the end of the evening and then a line for the bar. It was open bar all night but the selection was pretty limited and the drinks were served in tiny plastic cups. After that you find a seat amongst the very uncomfortable plastic chairs at banquet tables in a large concrete area. Maybe I was expecting more what you see on tv but I thought the setting would be more lush and tropical but it was basically set up as an outdoor banquet hall. It was right on the ocean though so the view was great. Once you have a seat you basically sit around for an hour. There is a band playing but really not much else to do. After the unearthing of the pig you will be called up by table to go through the buffet line. This process did run rather smoothly and quickly. The food was average. Some selections were very tasty but some of the meat was very dry and did not have much taste. After you are there for two hours then the show starts. The dancers were very good and the finale was incredible. The lei they give you when you walk in is actually a cheap shell necklace. Not what we were expecting. It wasnā€™t a bad experience but not sure I would ever do a luau again if this is what they are all like. My recommendation is to skip dinner and grab a drink at the Royal Kona Oceanside bar and watch the sunset and the show. You can see the entire show from there.
